HOW TO TASTE IT?

There are many ways to taste Rum, the ancestral tradition

in the French West Indies being in "Ti Punch".

Depending on the type of rum (White, Old, etc.) and the region of production, here are our different tasting methods.

Ti Punch

This is the traditional way of tasting agricultural rum. It is a cocktail composed of cane sugar, lime wedges and lengthened rum (White, Amber or Old). Some even put ice cubes in it (which can be a "sin" for many). The recipe for Ti Punch is often noted on bottles of white rums.

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Dry

This is the most natural way to taste cad rum without adding anyone to it.

The aromas are indeed preserved and the tasting is therefore more personal and tasty.

Old rum is tasted like spirits such as whiskey or cognac, ie a tasting glass (ideally tulip or Grappa glasses, see below).

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Ice cream

Some white rums can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

The rum will be "struck", thus delivering all its aromas.

It is advisable to use Rums stronger in alcohol for this type of tasting (Longueteau 62 °, Karukera "L'Intense", Marie-Galantes rums at 59 °, Bologne Ice ...).

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

However, we recommend that you put your ice-glass in instead and pour the glass into it when tasting. The effect will be that the rum will be less affected by the cold.

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Cocktail

Rum offers a multitude of variety of cocktails. The best known are Daiquiri, Mojito and Cuba Libre (generally made from Cuban rum like Baccardi or Havana Club) or Pina Colada. You will find on our blog some easy to prepare cocktail recipe ideas.

IN WHICH GLASSES?

Depending on the rum you are going to taste, as with other spirits, suitable glasses are recommended to appreciate all its flavors:

The Old Fashioned (or Rocks Glass)

It is the most common drink in the world of wine tasting. It is a glass containing on average 30 cl and which is used for several spirits (often for American-style "on the rocks" whiskey).

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

It is the ideal glass for a "Ti-Punch" because it allows to contain the sugar and the lemon which accompany the rum to then stir everything with a spoon.

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

It will also be used by those who taste their rum with frozen stones.

In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

It is very solid, holds well in the hand and is also ideal for cocktails such as Daiquiri or Caipirinha because it will easily contain the cold drink thanks to the ice cubes.

The Tulip Glass

It is the glass used by spirits professionals.

Its shape makes it possible to contain the aromas (you can also close them with a cap) and therefore obtain a tasting closer to the tastes sought by the distiller. It is highly recommended for aged rum and very aromatic white rums.

Special glasses

You will find on the market some glasses specifically created for the tasting of spirits.

Peugeot , for example, designed a glass with a particular shape for tasting. You must first put the base in the freezer and then take it out for tasting.

You then put your glass on it and pour your rum. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the base to reduce the temperature of the rum by 5 ° to 8 °.

Enjoy!
